PAST RESCUES

Over the years I have rescued several horses from going to slaughter. These are 2 of my favourites.

ROMMY

"ROMMY'S STORY"

In the early 1980's I received a surrender, a Thoroughbred from the track. The owner was told to destroy him as he was lame and would not race again. Thankfully he chose to surrender him to me. The horse was raced 12 months a year. Calgary in the summer and down south in the winter. When I got him he did not know how to eat grass. I had to put grain on the grass so he learned. He had always been stabled. For a year I let him rest and just be a horse. He became sound so the next year I slowly started him with light riding that increased as he got more fit. By the end of the second year I was able to rehome him to a lovely girl who just wanted to love him, ride him and do small jumps.

MOONRAKER

"MOONRAKER'S STORY"

In the 1980's and 90's I made an agreement with a meat buyer. He let me come on his lot and bring home a few horses at a time. He only charged me what he paid for the horses. One day I got a beautiful little 4 month old colt. I played with him and worked with him. I rode him very lightly as a 2 year old. He became our family pet. When he was about 4 years old my daughter Allison and a friend rode him. One day my friend asked if he could put him in the Calgary Stampede parade. I said yes and "Raker" behaved so well with a little bit of showing off. "Raker" was with us for many years and I am so grateful that I was able to save his life
